Email daily SEC EDGAR 8-K, 10-Q, and 10-K watchlist filings via SMTP

Quick overview

This workflow runs every weekday evening, checks SEC EDGAR submissions for a list of company CIKs, and emails you links to any new 8-K, 10-Q, or 10-K filings (including amendments) found within a defined lookback window using SMTP email.

How it works

  1. Runs every weekday at 18:00 on a schedule.
  2. Loads your watchlist settings, including company CIKs, form types to track, lookback days, SEC User-Agent, and email addresses.
  3. Validates that the SEC-required User-Agent contains a real contact email before making any SEC requests.
  4. Fetches each company’s public submissions JSON from data.sec.gov, rate-limited to about 5 requests per second.
  5. Filters filings to the watched form types (including amendments), keeps only those within the lookback window, and deduplicates results using stored history so the same accession number is not emailed twice.
  6. Sends a plain-text email via SMTP with one line per new filing (plus any CIK data issues) and skips sending when nothing new is found.

Setup

  1. Update the CIK watchlist, form types, lookbackDays, secUserAgent, and the to/from email addresses in the Settings values.
  2. Configure an SMTP email credential for the email-sending step and ensure your SMTP server allows the chosen from address.
  3. Activate the workflow and keep it running in the same n8n instance so the stored “seen filings” history can prevent duplicate emails.

Requirements

  • n8n 2.35 or later and an SMTP account. No API key needed: EDGAR is free and public.

Customization

  • Add forms such as S-1, DEF 14A or 4 to the forms setting, or change the schedule. Keep requests under 10 per second.
